Chock Full O’ Nuts Coffee: Now Even Richer*

Chock Full O Nuts coffee can

For a change of pace, this story looks at the lighter side of product marketing and changes.

Chock Full O’ Nuts coffee is certainly a brand name from the past and is now making a come back with a new owner and a big advertising campaign.

Their popular jingle is still probably in the heads of millions of Americans: “Chock Full O’ Nuts is the heavenly coffee, heavenly coffee … better coffee a millionaire’s money can’t buy.”  [Watch the 1974 TV commercial reprising one from the 50s or 60s.]

The new owners still want to convey the superiority of their coffee and even held a contest to find the best new singer for their old jingle. Of course, with so many rich people in America now, a coffee good enough for a mere millionaire isn’t saying much. So, Chock Full O’ Nuts has inconspicuously modified their jingle accordingly [listen carefully to the 2007 version]:

It looks like inflation has even taken its toll on millionaires.

  1. On a similiar note about getting eith the times, when is 20th Century Fox going to change their name to 21st Century Fox?

  2. Why not? 20th Century Insurance did (a year early!)

  3. I tried Chock Full O’Nuts a while back, falling for the cute old timey logo and tagline. Blech! That stuff is barely better than Sanka. I can understand why this coffee was popular a 50 years ago or whenever, but there’s so much good coffee around nowadays, I don’t know how this brand can compete. I’m not a coffee snob. I can tell a really good cup of coffee from a really bad one, but other than that I’m not picky about it. Chock Full O’Nuts is truly TERRIBLE coffee.

  4. My sister and I have fond memories of eating at the Chock (as my sister and I called it) with our mother on 161st Street and River Avenue in the Bronx, directly across the street from Yankee Stadium. My sister’s favorite was and to this day is the Date Nut Bread with Cream Cheese as mine was the white powdered donut. Our mother loved the coffee and to this day I buy Chock in the Sup
    in Shop Rite.

So, you can’t imagine how excited and nostalgic I became when I saw that a Chock opened on Avenue J in Brooklyhn, NY. Kosher to boot!!!!

Thanks Chock, for all the great memories and great cups of joe.

  5. I *love* Chock Full o’ Nuts! It was introduced to me my a fellow DJ and have been hooked ever since. We used to have to order via mail but now Super Wal*Mart carries it at a great price. It has a wonderful full-bodied flavor that can’t be beat IMHO. Nice post!

  6. I just went to see a movie with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. The movie was entitled “The Bucket List”. Essentially the bucket list is a list of things that the two of them wanted to do before they died of terminal metastatic brain cancer. They were were cremated. Their ashes were left in coffee cans and placed on top of the highest peak of Mount Everest in the Himalayan Mountains. The Name on the outside of the coffee cans were “Chock Full of Nuts (The heavenly) Coffee.”

  7. New Yorkers may get plenty of Chock Full o’Nuts coffee, but of late they haven’t been getting much Chock Full o’Nuts advertising. And those of you who remember the advertising are probably glad. The can of regular Chock Full o’Nuts coffee is the best-selling individual grocery product in New York, according to Richard N. Costello, agency president. But the sales here have been flat or slipping slightly, he said, and that is why the company is advertising again.
